A Few Thoughts On UK’s 6-3 Win vs. Ohio U, March 12th 2013

Anyone who’s been paying attention to this year’s brand of baseball being played by our boys in blue knows that they’re seeing something pretty special.

These guys can play. You don’t need me to tell you that.

At second, JT Riddle keeps doing what he does best: flash the glove. Matt Reida is on the same agenda at short, and in my mind the Reida-Riddle combo is worth the price of admission. These two seem like they’ve played together since little league. Riddle is batting .400 in 16 games thus far, with 14 RBI and 15 runs scored. Perhaps more impressive that this: in 65 AB, he has struck out twice. Twice. Riddle has yet to make an error in the field, and Reida has made only two in 71 total chances. Both Riddle and Reida have excellent range, with Reida showing an ability to go deep in the hole or behind the bag at second for grounders. Riddle does an outstanding job of corralling grounders to either side, and pops up from sliding grabs as quick as anyone I’ve seen recently.

AJ Reed is continuing to rake, with 5 homers and 23 RBI in his 61 AB (16 games). So concerned with the consequences of throwing Reed a strike, Ohio U starter Sean Kennedy intentionally walked him twice in a row, starting with Reed’s very first at-bat. It didn’t matter much; RF Kyle Barrett went 2-4 with 2 runs, while LF Zac Zellers added a pair of hits himself, one being a two-run shot over the LF wall. It was his sixth career four-bagger.

C Zach Arnold was 1-2 with a run scored and one driven in, but it wasn’t his bat that caught my eye: to be honest, I was more interested in watching him throw to second before each inning started. He’s got a very good arm, and I recorded a sub-2.0 pop times at least twice for him. I’ll be watching him more closely.

Most notable was RHP Trevor Gott‘s 16th career save, breaking UK’s all-time record of 15 set by Lorhn Frazier, who pitched for the Cats from 1990-93. He also set the single-season mark for saves with 9 in 2012. Gott has pitched 17 1/3 innings in his 16 career saves, striking out 25 and allowing a measly 4 hits and two walks. Gott was ranked the 41st best prospect in the Cape Cod League in 2012 after having made the Cape’s All-Star Team in 2011. He was also on USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award Watch List, last year.

UK’s starter LHP Ryne Combs went 4 innings (a career high) in what was his second career start, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out three. Freshman righty Tyler Cox relieved him and added three Ks but gave up two runs on three hits. Cox spun an outstanding breaking ball that seemed to drop so much that he had trouble commanding it, at times. I look for him to be a key reliever at UK, in the future. Fellow freshman RHP Zach Strecker went 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing only one hit in picking up his first career win. Strecker will likely add velocity by the end of the year, since he still has room to grow at 6’4”, 225.

UK hits the road to start off conference play with a three-game series at Florida on the 15th, but return home on the 19th to take on WKU at The Cliff. They also face off against Mississippi State, Marshall and Georgia this month, so 9 of the 11 games remaining in March will be vs. SEC opponents. UK is now 14-2 overall, 9-1 at home. And the best is yet to come.

This sure would be nice to see.

Our record says that we are good against Florida, but this year we aren’t doing a great job in proving history correct. Lot’s of streaks have been broken.  Let’s hope we play better and start some sort of new streak today.

  • Former NBA star Dominique Wilkins is considered the greatest player in school history.  However, in one of the great coincidences of college basketball history, Wilkins never played in the NCAA tournament; the Bulldogs made their first NCAA appearance in 1983—which would have been Wilkins’ senior year had he not opted for the NBA. The 1983 team made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Championshipbefore being eliminated by eventual champion North Carolina State.

Arkansas Information:

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball program is the men’s college basketball team representing the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Established in 1891, the team has competed in the Southeastern Conference since its inception in 1932. Though it has been historically overshadowed by the school’s football program, the Bulldogs’ basketball squad has had its share of successes, including a trip to the NCAA Final Four in 1983 under head coach Hugh Durham. The school has also produced a number of basketball greats, notably Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins.

The team’s current head coach is Mark Fox. In just his second season, Fox coached the Bulldogs to a 21-11 record, including a 9-7 record in conference play, and their first at-large NCAA Tournament bid since 2002.
